A growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can develop through effort, practice, and perseverance. When children understand that challenges help them grow, they become more resilient, embrace learning, and are less afraid of failure.

What can you do to encourage a growth mindset?

  • Praise Effort, Not Just Talent Instead of saying, "You're so cleaver!", try "I love how you kept trying even when it was tricky!" This reinforces that effort leads to success.

  • Reframe Mistakes as Learning Opportunities Help children see mistakes as part of the learning process. Encourage them to ask, "What can I learn from this?" instead of feeling discouraged.

  • Use the Power of "Yet" If a child says, "I can’t do this," add "yet!" to remind them that skills improve with practice.

  • Encourage Problem-Solving Instead of rushing to fix things for them, ask questions like, "What could you try next?" to help them develop problem-solving skills.

  • Model a Growth Mindset Show children that you also face challenges and keep learning. Say things like, "I found this difficult, but I kept trying and got better!"

The Benefits of a Growth Mindset

Children with a growth mindset:

  1. Are more willing to take on challenges

  2. Develop resilience and perseverance

  3. Build confidence in their ability to improve

  4. View effort as the key to success

  5. Enjoy learning and see it as a lifelong journey

By fostering a growth mindset, we help children develop the resilience and confidence they need to thrive. This is not just in school, but in life.
